The African Continental Free Trade Area, which went into force in May, finally signed Africa’s largest economy on Sunday. Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari agreed to the landmark deal at the African Union summit in Niger after four years of negotiations. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a free trade area which as of 2018 includes 28 countries. It was created by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement among 54 of the 55 African Union nations. The free-trade area is the largest in the world in terms of the number of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organization. While the U.S. and U.K. are turning their backs on multilateral free trade agreements, Africa is headed in the opposite direction.
