The functions of different organizational structures are to govern a company’s efficiencies and productivity. It’s often a chain of command in business and how hierarchies and each department are structured that make it productive – or not. The most common type is the hierarchical, top-down organizational chart that shows people by their functional position. Others include: divisional structure, matrix structure, and flat structure. Four Types of Organizational Charts: Functional Top-Down, Flat, Divisional, and Matrix The functional organizational chart is structured with executives on the top and employees at the bottom. People are divided into different departments according to their specialties or functions they serve in the company. An organizational chart template, when properly filled out, can help you see where positions can benefit your business the most, and what functions that you may need a person in a new position to provide. Organizational charts (or hierarchy charts) are the graphical representation of an organization’s structure. Its purpose is to illustrate the reporting relationships and chains of command within the organization. Corporations can have many structures, but the most typical corporation organizational structure consists of the (1) board of directors, (2) officers, (3) employees, and (4) shareholders or owners. There is no limit -- your corporation can have as many as are desirable or expedient to do business. Similar to a hierarchical organizational structure, a functional org structure starts with positions with the highest levels of responsibility at the top and goes down from there. Primarily, though, employees are organized according to their specific skills and their corresponding function in the company.
