Components of crude oil distillation
Figure 16.1 illustrates a schematic diagram of the crude oil distillation system considered here. The system consists of two crude oil distillation units: (1) the atmospheric distillation unit (ADU) and (2) the vacuum distillation unit (VDU), two crude oil furnaces, and a heat exchanger network (HEN). The main process for separating the hydrocarbon components of crude oil is fractional distillation. Crude oil fractions separated by distillation are passed on for subsequent processing into numerous products, ranging from gasoline and diesel fuel to heating oil to asphalt. Given the pattern of modern demand (which tends to be highest for transportation fuels such as gasoline), the market value of a crude oil generally rises with increasing yields of light products. Crude oil is separated by using a method called Distillation. Crude Oil is made from components that are different from one another. It contains many hydrocarbons. When Crude Oil is heated steam comes off it and produces vapour. The vapour is then set into a column. The vapour rises up the column and looses its heat. While the process of refining crude oil is nowhere near as complex as the process for harnessing nuclear energy, it is still quite ingenious and offers an inside look at one of our most controversial, essential commodities. The first step in refining crude oil is known as fractional distillation. We Crude oil is first heated and then put into a distillation column, also known as a still, where different products boil off and are recovered at different temperatures. Lighter products, such as butane and other liquid petroleum gases (LPG), gasoline blending components, and naphtha, are recovered at the At the molecular level, crude oil is composed predominantly of carbon, which can make up as much of 87% of the material. Hydrogen is another major component that makes up as much as 13% of crude oil. Other components that are found in crude in varying amounts include oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and helium.

The production of plastics begins with the distillation of crude oil in an oil refinery. This separates the heavy crude oil into groups of lighter components, called
Distillation process of Crude oil. Crude oil is a fossil fuel, it was made naturally from decaying plants and animals living in ancient seas millions of years ago -most places you can find crude oil were once sea beds. Crude oils vary in color, from clear to tar-black, and in viscosity, from water to almost solid. Petroleum refining processes are the chemical engineering processes and other facilities used in petroleum refineries (also referred to as oil refineries) to transform crude oil into useful products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil and fuel oils. Crude oil is made of different components whose sizes, weights and boiling temperatures are different from each other. When the crude oil is heated with high pressure steam at a high temperature, it boils and forms vapour.

The oil is separated into its constituents by distillation, and some of these components. (such as the refinery gas) are further separated with chemical reactions and Once it enters the modern refinery, crude oil goes through a process called fractional distillation. This process separates the different components of crude oil so OSHA Technical Manual (OTM) | Section IV: Chapter 2 - Petroleum Refining Process. As the temperature of the crude oil in the distillation column rises, the crude oil separates itself into different components, called “fractions.” Distillation process of Crude oil.
